Woodger was born on 2 May 1894 and was educated at Felsted School in Essex, showing an early interest in biology. He went to University College London in 1911 to read zoology. He served during the First World War. In 1919 he resumed his scholarship at UCL and carried out research there till 1922. He then went to the Department of Biology at the University of London Middlesex Hospital Medical School as a Reader where he lectured.
